Position: Stage Manager 

Reports to:  Executive Director

Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt

Summary

Northwest Sinfonietta (NWS) is seeking a part-time Stage Manager. The Stage Manager has primary responsibility for coordinating and arranging all physical and logistical elements of performances and rehearsals of the orchestra. The successful candidate will be efficient and effective, able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure, and demonstrate care for the artistic product of the orchestra.

Stage Manager Responsibilities

  • Attend all main stage rehearsals and performances, or arrange for suitable substitute.

  • Work in collaboration with the Executive Director, Operations Manager and rehearsal/concert venue staff to ensure any rehearsal and performances spaces are adequately equipped with chairs, music stands, conductor’s podium, stage lighting, electrical outlets, extension chords, any large instruments not supplied by the musicians, etc.

  • Work in collaboration with the Executive Director, Operations Manager and rehearsal and concert venue staff to establish and satisfy staging, lighting and audio requirements for each rehearsal and performance.

  • Responsible for calling shows as needed, and coordinating with venue stage and technical crews and front-of-house.

  • Responsible for storage, maintenance and upkeep of the equipment owned by NWS.

  • Coordinate transportation of orchestra-related equipment to and from rehearsal and concert venues as needed.

  • Responsible for load-in, stage set-up and appearance, equipment/instrument moves during rehearsals and performances, stage strike, equipment/instrument storage and load-out.

  • Arrange with venues for backstage amenities including restroom facilities, and secure space for instrument cases and personal belongings.

  • Responsible for the physical and logistical needs of Artistic Partners and guest soloists and orchestra members at rehearsal and concert venues including dressing rooms, special needs as requested or negotiated by artists.

  • In consultation with Executive Director and Operations Manager, arrange for borrowing or rental of needed equipment and instruments, and coordinate keyboard tuning when necessary.

  • Work in collaboration with Executive Director and Operations Manager to ensure good, safe performance conditions.

Abilities and Skills

  • Experience with orchestral set up requirements and ability to communicate set changes to stage hands. Familiarity with orchestral instruments and repertoire a plus.

  • Excellent attention to detail, well organized.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and anticipate needs, remaining flexible to adjust to situations as they occur.

  • Reliability.

  • Ability to work flexible hours.

  • Should be able to move large and cumbersome items and lift up to 40 pounds without risking personal harm, or be able to provide an alternative.

  • Must possess a valid Washington Driver’s License and have reliable transportation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation

This is a part-time, non-exempt position, with hours and schedule based on NWS’s concert season (October-May). The estimated seasonal time commitment is 135-175 hours. Additional administrative work hours may be available for interested candidates based on skills and experience. The starting hourly rate is $23.00.
